Wisconsin Police Report: After a 5-year-old from Milwaukee inadvertently shot himself with a gun on Tuesday, authorities say two males have been detained.

The incident took place right before 8:30 o’clock. 900 block of South 29 Street, according to Milwaukee police.

The young man, named as Elijo Gonzales, was taken to a nearby hospital where he subsequently passed away, according to FOX6 Milwaukee.

According to the police, two men, ages 35 and 58, were detained for leaving a handgun unattended. It wasn’t immediately obvious what the two men’s relationship was to the child.

The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office was being tasked with investigating possible criminal charges against the two men.

On Twitter, Milwaukee’s mayor Cavalier Johnson described the boy’s passing as “very distressing.”

The mayor advised in his letter to “please make sure to keep your guns in a gun safe, with a gun lock, and out of reach of youngsters.”

Gonzalez attended Seeds of Health Elementary School, according to confirmation from the institution to the station.
The school released a statement saying, “Elijo was a vivacious, enthusiastic student who loved studying and was a source of joy to his family and friends.” “While we mourn this loss, our hearts go out to our families and the local community.
