During the midterm elections on Tuesday, a bullet was fired outside of a polling station in a tiny village in Wisconsin, as reported by a county election official. This led election authorities to transfer voting to their backup location.

Thus according Scott McDonell, the Dane County Clerk, the voting process was held up for approximately an hour and a half in the Wisconsin Village of Brooklyn as a result of sheriff’s officers locking down a community building that served as the only polling place in the municipality.
Based on a news release issued by the Wisconsin Green County Sheriff Jeff Skatrud, a man in his seventies was taken into custody around two and a half hours after the incident was reported on suspicion of engaging in disorderly behavior while armed.
Voting will continue for the rest of the day in a public works building that is half a mile distant, where the local elections officials have relocated to after the earlier building was damaged.
On Tuesday, the Wisconsin Village District Attorney’s Office for Green County announced that the suspect had not yet been charged with any crime.
In order to accommodate voters who weren’t able to enter the polls while police reacted, Wisconsin Village has requested for a court order to extend voting hours by 90 minutes. This will allow them to vote.
McDonell stated that he did not anticipate the disruption to prevent voters from casting their ballots, and that the county would begin reporting results as planned Tuesday evening without waiting for voting to close in Brooklyn. McDonell also stated that he did not anticipate the disruption to prevent voters from casting their ballots.
Following the census completed in 2020, there are approximately 1,500 people living in Brooklyn. The village is located partially in Dane County and partially in Green County, with approximately two-thirds of its population residing in Dane County.
As per Skatrud, deputies from both counties’ sheriff’s departments responded to the incident on Tuesday morning. He stated that there was no evidence to suggest that the gunshot was related to voting operations, and that there was also no ongoing threat to the safety of the public.
