“It was really hard to believe. I thought the same thing when I got that phone call. “How in the world could a 5-year-old have a loaded gun?” asked Town and Country Police Chief James Cavins. For now, investigators won’t say anything.

Investigators told 5 On Your Side that the child’s mother dropped her off at school on Clayton Road.

The child also didn’t know the loaded gun was in her bag, according to the police.

Chief Cavins said, “We really think that this was an accident and that no one had any bad intentions.”

The head of Principia Lower School, Dr. Merry Sorrells, said, “It was really scary and worrying.”

“Police all over the country preach about gun locks and loaded gun safes. Don’t let your kids play with your loaded gun. “Don’t load them up,” the police chief said.

At the same time, the police, school officials, and the Division of Family Services all became interested in the investigation.

Throughout the day, the student’s parents have been in touch with school administrators and have been helpful.

James Cavins, the chief of police in Town & Country, said that his department and the Division of Family Services are both looking into the case.

They think that this was an accident and that the student didn’t do it on purpose. Cavins said that so far in the investigation, his department hasn’t found any signs that the student’s parents were careless.

Cavins says that all parents should make sure that guns are locked up. He says that almost every police station in the area gives away free gun locks.
