$500 Monthly Payment
The impending end of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will affect millions of American families to purchase nutritious food and meet their daily needs. Amidst the increasing inflation rate in the country, it is important that they will receive financial assistance either from the federal or state.
In a published article in STUDENTLOAN.LIVE, selected residents in Oakland, California will receive a $500 monthly payment as part of the Oakland Resilient Families guaranteed basic income pilot. This will last for six months or until June this year.
This is already the second phase or second round of the program. The first program started last year and it benefited around 300 families for 18 months. Meanwhile, officials in Oakland did not expect that there will be a second round of the Oakland Resilient Families but there was a $1 million donation coming from an anonymous person.

Eligibility of the Recipients
Not all residents in Oakland, California will receive the $500 monthly payment. There is a set of criteria that a potential recipient should meet and these are the following:
- Low-income residents
- Earnings must have been 138 percent or less than the federal poverty level.
- For a household of four, the maximum income allowed for families was $36,570.
- To qualify eligible residents applying must have had at least one child in the household that’s 17 years old or younger.
According to a published article in The U.S. Sun, the Oakland Resilient Families was an original initiative of Mayor Libby Schaaf who was able to raise an amount of $6.7 million from private donors. On the other hand, the new city Mayor Sheng Thao, who was sworn into office in January, did not yet give any comments if this program will continue after June 2023.
Furthermore, the chief executive officer of the organization that’s an advocate for empowering low-income families Jesus Gerena said, “There has to be a policy measure from the government to help support the longevity of this work.”
