The Biden administration has made a new change that will provide financial assistance to first-time homebuyers and owners.

Based on a statement from The White House, the change will impact the new borrowers’ mortgage insurance premiums for loans insured by the Federal Housing Authority (FHA).

As a result, the annual premium will drop from 0.85 percent to 0.55 percent.

To be clear, the savings are not based on the loan amount but instead on the FHA’s mortgage insurance.

The monthly principal and interest payments are in addition to these payments.

The policy will become operative on March 20.

How Much Money Can Homebuyers Save?

Where you live, and the price of the home will affect how much money you save overall.

The following are some examples from the White House:

  • With a $200,000 mortgage, a homebuyer family can purchase a house in Detroit and save $600 annually.
  • A Cincinnati homebuyer family will save $900 annually with a $300,000 mortgage.
  • A homebuyer family with a $400,000 mortgage in Phoenix will save $1,200 annually.
  • With a $500,000 mortgage, a homebuyer family in Austin will save $1,500 annually.

Despite this being a federal benefit, many states have created programs to assist homeowners.

The Oregon Homeowner Assistance Fund (OHAF) offers relief from ongoing and past-due payments of up to $60,000. According to state estimates, about $72 million in funds are still available to assist 700 homeowners.

Financially strapped residents in California can receive up to $80,000 through the Mortgage Relief program. With an average payment of $28,137, about 10,500 families have benefited from just under $300 million.

Pennsylvania’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program assists residents who are elderly or disabled. Depending on their income, residents can claim anything from $250 to $975. A different program in Colorado provides payments of more than $1,000.

Additionally, a brand-new proposal would allow eligible Americans to receive a massive $2.5 billion pot, ranging from $500 to $1,250.
