Starting in March 2023, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments will be at pre-pandemic levels.
According to the federal USDA Food and Nutrition Service, the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) issued the declaration on Tuesday.
Two million individuals and one million households in Illinois will be affected by these federal changes. Due to the federal shift, about half of all states have already stopped offering SNAP emergency allocation. Whenever the federal increases expire in February, Illinois will continue to receive advantages.
Since the start of the COVID-19 public health emergency, SNAP emergency allotments have been distributed to help with food insecurity issues. By February 2023, the benefits will drop to their pre-pandemic levels, and in March, they will resume.
Benefit reductions for SNAP members could range from $95 to $250 for each person per month.
The Illinois Department of Human Services claims that this decrease in SNAP benefits is due to a change in federal policy rather than improvements to specific SNAP cases.
According to Illinois Department of Human Services Secretary Grace B. Hou, the agency is collaborating with food bank partners throughout the state to provide for citizens’ needs throughout this period of adjustment.
All Illinois SNAP families have received both the standard monthly payment and an emergency SNAP allotment since April 2020.
Every SNAP household will start receiving benefits on March 1, 2023, by the standard eligibility determination procedure, which takes into consideration the household size, income, and deductions. There will be a variation in the benefits amount reduction. The size and financial situation of each household will also be a concern.
