Several states in the United States have experienced drastic weather due to wildfires, hurricanes, and other disasters.

On February 24, the IRS announced they are extending the tax deadline to help Americans in the hardest hit areas. Tax deadlines for Individuals and businesses in most counties in California, Georgia, and Alabama are extended to October 16. The new date has been extended from the previously announced May 15.

The tax deadline also includes the extension for filing returns, paying additional contributions to IRAs and health savings accounts, and paying for the final estimated quarterly payment for 2022.

The extension also means qualified taxpayers have until October 16 to make any additional contribution to IRAs and health savings accounts. Yahoo! Finance reports the deadline for the final estimated quarterly payment for 2022 is also due on October 16 from the previous January 17.

According to MSN, the extension is already automatic for those who qualify. Individuals do not need to file paperwork or call the agency for an extension. However, suppose a taxpayer receives a late payment penalty or filing notice from the IRS that has an extended tax deadline. In that case, the taxpayers should call the number on the notice to abate the penalty.

Taxpayers can visit the IRS website for more information on who qualifies for the “disaster situation” extension. Taxpayers outside the qualifying area can also call the agency to see if they can receive an extension, particularly workers who helped in relief activities. Anyone who believes they are entitled to the support can contact the IRS at (866) 562-5227.
