Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) and Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) strengthened their bond in the season 4 finale, leaving Rookie viewers on the tip of their seats. Whether or not #Chenford is the genuine deal is unknown at this time, save that the two must act as a couple while executing an undercover operation. But one thing is certain: season 5 of the ABC procedural drama will premiere later this year!

But besides Chenford’s destiny, a lot of other issues remain unresolved. Will Mekia Cox’s character Nyla Harper return from maternity leave? Will she remain Tru Valentino’s T.O., Aaron Thorsen? What’s going on with Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan) and John Nolan (Nathan Fillion)? How would Mid-Wilshire operate without Tim or Lucy present? It’s a lot to process, but maybe season 5 will quickly offer some solutions.

Release date
Prepare yourselves because ABC will begin airing The Rookie season 5 on Sunday nights at 10 p.m. ET on September 25.
Less than a month after the drama’s fourth season ended, the much-anticipated announcement was revealed on the show’s Instagram in early June.
“When you hear that the season premiere of #TheRookie is Sept 25 on ABC 👏 Who can’t wait to tune in?!” read the caption.
“I couldn’t be more proud of what we have accomplished with this show,” he wrote. “Congratulations to our cast, crew, writers, producers, casting directors, directors, and everyone who has lent their talents to #therookieabc over the years. This job brings me real joy, I look forward to many more episodes with you all.”
Nathan continued: “I’d also like to thank the fans who keep coming back. You keep watching ‘em, we’ll keep making ‘em. #therookieabc #season5 #holycrap And thanks to ABC for the early pickup! It’s such a good feeling!”
Cast
The following is the cast:
- Nathan Fillion as John Nolan
- Alyssa Diaz as Angela Lopez
- Richard T. Jones as Wade Grey
- Mekia Cox as Nyla Harper
- Melissa O’Neil as Lucy Chen
- Eric Winter as Tim Bradford
- Jenna Dewan as Bailey Nune
- Shawn Ashmore as Wesley Evers
- Tru Valentino as Aaron Thorsen
- Lisseth Chavez as Celina Juarez
Tru Valentino, who played rookie cop Aaron Thorsen throughout season 4 in recurrent roles, is one actor that is unquestionably returning for season 5. Fans may recall that his persona in France was charged with murdering his roommate. Though he successfully convinced his training officer Nyla Harper of his value, it is obvious that he still has a long way to go.
Spoiler Alert!
Nathan Fillion talked about the upcoming season at a panel at Comic-Con, where he unintentionally revealed information about a freshman rookie his character will be training in Mid-Wilshire.
“She …,” he said before quickly taking his words back and saying, “Sorry, spoiler.”
We, therefore, know that whoever enters will be a lady. How will she get along with Nolan and the other crewmates? Will she sabotage the romance between Nolan and Bailey? We have a lot of questions about this, and Celina, the newest recruit to the force, will probably be able to provide some answers.
But what can we anticipate for the upcoming season? Future plots were hinted at by executive producers Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter of Rookie. Alexi claims that Nyla would have a lighthearted plot around her pregnancy, which was made known in season 4. She also announced an episode in which Wesley Evers tries his hand at law enforcement.
In Chenford, Lucy and Tim’s romance might finally be depicted on TV.
“Obviously, we left quite the cliffhanger last season with the kiss which we’ve been building up to,” Alexi said. “There will definitely be some repercussions and fallout from that.”
Speaking of our favorite prospective new pair, along with a few other storylines, we could have learned more about where they left off. A season 5 trailer for the program was released in August, and it appears that plenty more drama is in store.
In addition to watching Chenford play lovers while undercover, the season 4 finale will have Nolan receiving a prize for his efforts during the stand-off. While he has the freedom to accept any mission, an old enemy has returned and is prepared to endanger all of his loved ones.
Our curiosity has been awakened!
