Texas Congressman Seeks to Pass New Laws to Recognize American Slaves

Several pieces of legislation that Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) has proposed aim to recognize American slaves and their descendants.

According to Green, who spoke to The Hill, “they need to have their descendants benefit from the injustice with justice at some time, in the manner of first ensuring that their ancestors are acknowledged for what they’ve done.” I could guarantee you that if Anglo people had experienced the injustice that Black citizens have in this nation, they will be doing what I’m doing and they’d have done it long ago.”

In “The Conscience Agenda: Our Moral Imperative,” Green proposes legislation that would increase Slavery Remembrance Day, offer a posthumous Congressional Gold Medal to American slaves, rename the Russell Senate Office Complex without Richard Russell’s name, pass the Securities and Exchange Atonement Act, and create the Department of Reconciliation.

This mission, according to Green, is more important than ever as the nation debates which aspects of African American history should be taught in schools.
