TANF Increase 2023: Are You Eligible For The Benefit?

FLUKER, LA - MAY 5: Christy Sibley (R) and daughter Rosheka stand in their trailer May 5, 2009 in Fluker, Louisiana. The highly impoverished rural town has very few jobs and no mayor. The recession has hit many Americans hard, but the rural Lower Mississippi Delta region has had some of the nation's worst poverty for decades. The mechanization of agriculture and movement of textile plants out of the country has left the region's economy in tatters, leaving generational poverty in its wake. Louisiana Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal has rejected $98.4 million of the federal government stimulus funds for the unemployment reform package. The package allows states to expand eligibility, potentially assisting thousands of unemployed Americans to weather the recession. The committee revealed last week that although 60 percent of poor adult Hoosiers get assistance from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, 80 percent of Indiana residents with impairments are jobless. A new measure may make it easier for all low-skilled workers to get employment in the state.

TANF is a federally financed program, but the states choose who is eligible. WishTV said a family of four cannot qualify if their annual income exceeds $8,547 in Indiana, one of the tightest income requirements in the country.

According to a Senate bill before the General Assembly, the income threshold would increase to 35% of the federal poverty level on July 1, 2025, and 50% on July 1, 2027. The latter amount equates to $15,000 a year for a family of four. According to the bill’s text, income restrictions would automatically rise or fall with inflation.

TANF Increase in Indiana: Who is Eligible?

The fact that hundreds of thousands of Indiana people lack the necessary job-seeking skills is one of the factors contributing to the state’s over 136,000 job vacancies last year.

This new TANF would provide job preparation training, assist low-income Indiana residents and people with disabilities in entering the labor field, and assist companies in hiring employees with little or no prior work experience.

Marca said the new House Bill 1160 might provide training programs to adult students and current employees in addition to the first TANF eligibility boost in more than 30 years.

If the legislation above passes, a program might be established to assist Hoosiers using TANF and other individuals with disabilities in receiving proper training from certain private businesses.
