President Tsai Ing Wen was greeted by Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Wednesday at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, close to Los Angeles. The meeting, which took place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, was met with threats of punishment from Beijing. Beijing is opposed to any exchange that may be interpreted as a sign of support for the island’s independence.
Tsai Ing Wen reaffirmed the statement made by the late President Reagan that “peace through strength” and pushed for further defense, commercial, and economic co-operation between the United States and Taiwan, claiming that “we are stronger when we work together.” McCarthy’s claim that the ties between the two sides had “never been stronger” hinted at bipartisan support for the island in the United States.

China Rejects the Visit by Tsai Ing Wen
In a long statement published by the government-run news outlet Xinhua early on Thursday morning, Asia time, the Chinese Foreign Ministry swiftly denounced the meeting. It said that despite China’s harsh objections and repeated warnings, the United States had “obstinately allowed” Tsai Ing Wen trip and meeting with McCarthy. It went on to accuse the United States of conspiring with Taiwanese authorities and aiding separatists seeking “Taiwan independence” in their attempts to conduct political activities on American soil, engage in official interactions with the United States, and improve substantive relations with Taiwan.
McCarthy’s actions, according to another statement from the National People’s Congress’ Foreign Affairs Committee, gravely violated the commitment the United States had made to China over the Taiwan matter and sent gravely unhelpful signals to separatist forces vying for Taiwan independence. Taiwan will not limit itself due to intimidation or intervention, the Taiwanese Foreign Ministry declared in a statement. Taiwan does not accept interference or suppression by any country for any reason.
The Taiwanese Defense Ministry reported on Tuesday that 20 Chinese military planes and three vessels had been spotted in the region surrounding Taiwan throughout the previous day.
