SNAP Benefits Update: Food Stamps to be Distributed to Americans All Throughout February

After a dozen states extended their support for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) through February, millions of food stamp recipients will continue to get their benefits. Some states have announced that they will be extending the food stamp program, as they provide assistance to millions of low-income families.

Food Stamps Programs

The federal government of the United States pledged $1 billion in April 2021 to the country’s food stamp programs. As many as 25 million people in low-income households will benefit from the additional $1 billion. According to Marca, in  September 2021, the food stamp program’s benefits would be phased off. Since some states extend their emergency SNAP benefits, several do not.

There are many states that are preserving SNAP benefits through February and extending emergency benefits through January. It all depends on how many people are in a household. There is, however, a minimum of $95, which will be acquired by households. Each person’s food stamp benefit climbed to $157 in October.

Extension of Emergency SNAP

Governor Greg Abbott announced on Wednesday, Feb. 2, that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) will provide emergency SNAP food benefits totaling over $326 million. Over 1.6 million Texas families are likely to benefit from the allotments.

According to the news released by the Office of the Governor in Texas, following clearance from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the HHSC will provide all SNAP households with an emergency allotment of at least $95 per month, up to the highest permissible benefit amount for their family size. The additional emergency allowance should appear in recipients’ accounts by February 28.

In addition to the emergency February distributions, Texans have previously received more than $5.8 billion in benefits since April 2020.

As stated in the report, SNAP, which is administered by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, is a federal program that provides food assistance to low-income families and individuals in the state. Texans who are in need of assistance can apply for benefits, such as SNAP and Medicaid, through YourTexasBenefits.com, or they can manage their benefits through the Your Texas Benefits mobile app.
