Leading Republicans in Congress are pressuring the Biden administration for information regarding the alleged Chinese spy balloon flying in the northern United States for the last few days.
They attacked President Joe Biden personally, claiming that the incident shows that American policies and postures do not discourage China. Several well-known Republicans agreed that America must have shot the balloon down.
Three people with knowledge of the incident said NBC News on Friday that employees for the “Gang of Eight,” a bipartisan group of leaders on the Hill, received a private briefing on the balloon on Thursday afternoon. One of the 8 politicians, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, posted late Thursday that he was asking for a conference for the group. However, the majority of the leadership may have already vanished for the weekend.
“President Biden cannot remain quiet in the face of China’s obvious disrespect for American sovereignty,” McCarthy wrote in a tweet.
According to a representative for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the 8 will receive a briefing from the Biden administration upcoming week. The Gang of Eight also includes the New York Democrat.
