Public Health Agencies Warned by CDC to Be Alert for Possible Importation of Dangerous Marburg Virus

The purpose of this Health Alert Network (HAN) Health Advisory from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is to warn medical professionals and healthcare agencies in the United States currently to confirm 2 types of Marburg virus disease (MVD) epidemics, one in Tanzania and the other in Equatorial Guinea. The majority of specialists concur that such 2 outbreaks are 2 different animal-to-human crossover incidents and that there is not yet enough proof to indicate a connection between them.

Zero known cases of MVD linked to such epidemics have been documented thus far in the US or any other nation than Tanzania and Equatorial Guinea. To raise public consciousness of the possibility of foreign cases in the United States, this Health Advisory includes information regarding recent epidemics.

Also, it contains the CDC’s advice for clinical laboratory biosafety issues in the US as well as case recognition, diagnosis, and other suggestions.
