Thousands of Cook County residents would be eligible for a property tax refund if they overpaid their taxes on the first installment of 2021. Are you eligible?

Many property owners were excluded from the exclusions that may have reduced their required payments. Senior citizens, people in their senior years, people with disabilities, and homeowners are among those who were excluded at that time.

Chicago Sun-Times (via Marca) reported that Cook County’s Treasury confirmed that the average return will be $833 through their spokesperson, Andrew Gavrilos.

The cheques will begin to be sent out this week and continue to be given out over the next months, up until all reimbursements have been sent.

Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said that checks for more over 50,000 will start being distributed this week to households who overpaid their first property tax due last year.

More than 53,000 property owners in Illinois’ biggest county will get refunds totalling more than $47 million (per ABC 7 Chicago).

The distribution of the property tax refund cheques is anticipated to begin this week and last for several months.

The treasurer’s office indicated that property tax exemptions, which are added to the Second Installment tax bill and lower the total taxes payable, are where the majority of the refunds are going. Homeowners, older citizens, those in senior freezes, and people with disabilities could be excluded.

How to Receive Cash

The money will be immediately paid into the accounts of more than half of the individuals who qualify for a property tax refund for three months, NBC Chicago reported.

A breakdown from the treasurer’s office is shown below:

  • In order to verify that the right party receives the return, 14,137 homeowners who paid taxes totaling $17.4 million in cash or by check will either receive an electronic refund or be issued a refund application.
  • Online property tax payments made by 16,629 households will result in an automated deposit of $14.8 million to their bank or credit card accounts.
  • 22,241 property owners who paid their taxes using an escrow account at a bank will get refund cheques totaling $14.8 million in the mail.
