Nebraska Lawmaker’s Filibuster Over Trans Rights

Democratic state senator Machaela Cavanaugh has filibustered everything including the transgender bill of rights that has come before the legislature this session. Cavanaugh has been protesting Nebraska’s proposal LB574 or the ‘Let them grow act’ of Nebraska lawmakers proposed by Nebraska state senator Kathleen Kauth that prohibits healthcare personnel from performing gender alteration procedures on children younger than 19. The prohibition includes puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgery.

Cavanaugh wants to filibuster everything to filter the bills to be passed and make sure that all bills are important and valuable. The transgender bill of Rights is the main bill that is filibustered in the session. There are 452 anti-LGBTQ bills in the US.

Senator Kathleen Kauth of Nebraska said this is an ‘emotional topic’. The transgender bill of rights they present is the ‘Let them grow act’ which gives equal opportunity and treatment to children. The senator continues that they want to let these kids’ bodies and brains grow and develop and work through the issues they are facing.

The session in Nebraska is scheduled to be concluded on June 9, 2023, and Cavanaugh said she will continue to filibuster any as long as needed.
