Local News in Washington: A Local Got Arrested After Trying to Abduct a Barista

Earlier this week, according to police, a man attempted to kidnap a barista at a drive-thru.

On Monday, January 16, at 5:06 a.m., surveillance footage captures a man in a pickup truck at a drive-thru window. The customer attempted to “drag the victim through the window using a looped ziptie device” as the barista handed him his change as he reached out of the car.

According to the article published by True Crime Daily on January 19, 2023, the man dropped the money on the ground after the victim resisted and drove off.

The word “Chevrolet” was written in cursive on the man’s “unique tattoo,” according to Auburn Police.

The victim was the only person operating the drive-thru at the time, according to a KIRO-TV report from January 17, 2023.

They are in vulnerable positions because they typically patrol those areas alone in the early morning hours when it is dark outside, according to Kolby Crossley, a spokesperson for the Auburn Police Department. However, the barista did a fantastic job of defending herself and repelling the intruder.

Matthew Darnell was apprehended by Auburn Police on Wednesday, January 18, on suspicion of attempting to kidnap someone. $500k has been set as his bail.

According to Auburn Police, the community overwhelmingly supported the agency’s efforts to find Darnell.
