LIHEAP: SDG&E Funds to Expire on June 30

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federally funded program that aims to assist families in reducing the costs associated with energy bills, minor energy-related home repairs, and energy crises.

In California, Congress appropriated $203 million to address the continued impacts of COVID-19. It is administered by the California Department of Community Services and Development, which contracts with community-based organizations to help with the LIHEAP application process.

According to the Times of San Diego, LIHEAP funds for San Diego Gas & Electric will expire until June 30.  The allocation of LIHEAP funds to SDG&E is around $10 million. While the federal government has allocated about $7 million, and the unused money will be returned to the state.

As the expiration date approaches, SDG$E will host a program with two nonprofit organizations to manage the LIHEAP payment process.

The electric company will work with Campesinos Unidos, Inc (CUI) and the MAAC Project to help residents in San Diego County with LIHEAP applications.

Applicants can visit the CUI office in the Escondido branch office, 644 West Ave., and in San Diego, 885 Gateway Center Way, Suite 103. You can visit the mentioned offices from Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. While the MAAC Project can be accessed through this website.

Interested applicants can also call 2-1-1 San Diego for more information about LIHEAP and the California Department CSD website for the income guidelines.
