LA County Board of Supervisors “Decarceration” initiative – According to city papers, the LA County Board of Supervisors is proposing a strategy to “decarcerate” jails by citation and releasing everyone who posts a bond of $50,000 or less. Los Angeles LA County Board of Supervisors to take actionable next steps to depopulate and decarcerate the Los Angeles County Jails” has been added as an agenda item for the board’s meeting on Tuesday.

Prison health care still bad

The governor of Illinois, JB Pritzker, and the director of the state prison system, Rob Jeffreys, have been requested to meet with a court-appointed monitor who has been hired to determine what is wrong with prison health care and how to solve it. (Image courtesy of www.illinoistimes.com)

There is only one public comment related to the legislation, which was introduced by Democrats Lindsey Horvath and Hilda Solis. The overcrowding in Los Angeles County jails and the state of mental health services would be classified as humanitarian crises, requiring the County to act swiftly and purposefully to find effective solutions. The proposal states. and place a high priority on lowering the number of people admitted to the Los Angeles County Jails.

From Mass Incarceration to Mass Coercion

More than seven million people were incarcerated in U.S. prisons and jails between the mid-1960s and the late 2000s, a rise from less than eight hundred thousand at the time. This rapid expansion, often known as mass incarceration, has always been about isolating, stigmatizing, and taking advantage of the working class’s lowest members. The LA County Board of Supervisors agenda is denounced as “dangerous”

The LA County Board of Supervisors or the county sheriff was given instructions to review the court’s bail thresholds and to cite and release “people with aggregate bail sums set at $50,000 or below.” Los Angeles Superior Court would be necessary to implement the Emergency Bail Schedule that was in impact at the height of the COVID pandemic.

The agenda item was denounced as “dangerous” by the vice president of the Los Angeles Association of Deputy District Attorneys, Eric Siddall. According to Siddall, the LA County Board of Supervisors (BOS) attempt to overhaul portions of the criminal justice system without consulting stakeholders is reckless and dangerous. The authors did not consult anyone knowledgeable and experienced in public safety problems. Without addressing the underlying causes of crime or safeguarding the public, they aim to reduce the prison population.

In accordance with the proposal, he said, law enforcement officials would be instructed to cite and release people who have been detained for crimes like domestic violence, child pornography possession, residential burglary, robbery, or assault with a handgun.

LA County Board of Supervisors “decarceration” initiative: What’s next?

Activists in Los Angeles demonstrated in front of the LA County Board of Supervisors on Thursday morning to demand the closing of the Men’s Central Jail, which is located in the heart of the city. They insisted that the LA County Board of Supervisors make a commitment to a schedule for closing the facility by March 2025.

After it was discovered that there were three convicts in Los Angeles, protests erupted. One person passed away in the Men’s Central Jail within the course of a week. In his criticism of the proposal, Siddall pointed out that it doesn’t address how to “protect the community from violent criminals.” The offices of Horvath and Solis did not immediately reply to a request from Fox News Digital for comment regarding the agenda item and Siddall’s complaints.

The LA County Board of Supervisors will convene at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
