Kansas Man Charged with Three-count First Degree Murder

Peyton Tyler, a fourth-grader at Lowman Hill Elementary in Topeka, was one of two people killed in a house fire. Inside the house, another adult and child were discovered unresponsive and eventually confirmed dead. Both were rushed to the hospital, where the child died. According to the school district, Peyton Tyler, who was a fourth-grader student, was known for her positivity and her joyful spirit. The school has extended their sympathy and sadness for what happened to the child (AP, 2023).

A fire at a Topeka home on Jan. 20 killed Genny L. Fitzpatrick, 30, Peyton Tyler, 9, and Kourtney K. Tyler, 1, all of Topeka. A 32-year-old man has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder. He also faces charges of aggravated child endangerment and aggravated arson.

When the firefighters arrived, the house was already fully swallowed in flames. While the victims were surrounded by flames inside, Kyle Tyler was discovered on the back porch. According to preliminary findings, the victims’ deaths were caused by smoke inhalation. A “big fire” that started upstairs and a second one that erupted in the basement were both put out by firefighters.

Before Kyle Tyler was arrested, he was treated first for smoke inhalation. He’s being held on a $1 million bond; his name has not yet been listed in court records. The further investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
