Atiq Ahmad, a former lawmaker, and his brother Ashraf were fatally shot even though they were with a police escort on their way to have a medical check-up on Saturday. Three men posing as journalists shot the two brothers from close range in Prayagraj City in Uttar Pradesh state.

Then men quickly surrendered to the police officers after the shooting incident, with one of them chanting “Jai Shri Ram,” or “Hail Lord Ram,” a slogan that becomes the battle cry for Hindu people. The chat means they have campaigned against Muslims.

The place of Uttar Pradesh is ruled by the Indian Hindu nationalist Bhartiya Party since 2017. During his governance, it takes 180 people faced criminal charges in India’s most populous state having been killed in so-called “police encounters” that rights groups say are often extrajudicial killings.

After the shooting incident on Saturday, the authorities implemented a ban on the assembly of more than four people and even cut off the internet across mobile phones in Prayagraj City. They also requested a judicial investigation headed by a retired judge.
