On Oct. 1, 2022, as scheduled, the COLA kicked in and will run through Sept. 30, 2023, which will help and support SNAP payment recipients to offset increasing food costs. Recipients of SNAP, food stamps formerly known as SNAP, will receive their payment in January soon, which also includes a 12.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) that was approved for the fiscal year 2023.

According to a published post by Yahoo Finance, payments in January should be the same as the previous months, depending on your state’s SNAP schedule. Department of Agriculture of SNAP is part of the U.S. The program is administered at the state level.

SNAP is pro-food-purchasing assistance to low-income households or struggling families. Those who are eligible will be deposited monthly into your SNAP account. Cards can be swiped at checkout in grocery stores, major retailers, and other outlets, similar to debit cards like EBT cards it is linked to SNAP accounts. You will need to enter your PIN to complete the transaction. It depends on what or where your state is and your current status, you might also be able to purchase eligible foods online at participating retailers. You can visit the page of USDA to see which retailers accept online EBT payments.

To find out when you will receive your January 2023 payment, the USDA provides information on monthly payments and schedules for all states and territories. Mostly the states and the dates of the staggered payment throughout the month are based on SNAP case numbers, your last names, or Social Security numbers. The schedule of payment is usually the same every month.

Among the available other items, you can’t buy SNAP benefits with other things like alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, vitamins, medicines, supplements, live animals, pet foods, cleaning supplies, paper products, and cosmetics. In most states, you can’t buy hot meals.

The exceptions are the states that have signed up for the SNAP Restaurant Meals Program, including Maryland, Michigan, Rhode Island, Alaska, California, Illinois, and Virginia.
