Florida Legislator’s Proposal Would Abolish the Democratic Party

After suffering severe defeats in the most recent election, a Republican state legislator in Florida has introduced a bill that will completely ban the party.

State Senator Blaise Ingoglia (R-Spring Hill), who introduced “The Ultimate Cancel Act” (SB 1248), would suspend the registration of any political party that defended slavery throughout the Civil War.

According to this bill, if a party has previously accepted pro-slavery positions in its platforms, the Secretary of State must decertify the party and destroy it, according to Ingoglia.

Those associated with any “canceled” party will become non-party-associated voters if the contentious bill were to pass.

It will be interesting to see if the voters who have had their certifications removed decide to rejoin the party since they’re aware that it was the party that supported the matter of slavery, according to Ingoglia.

Any “canceled” party may re-register, but the institution’s name has to be considerably different from another party’s already registered with the government.  Democrats are mainly criticizing the proposal.

“The Republican Party should be ashamed for introducing such significant legislation. Nikki Fried, the recently elected chair of the Florida Democratic Party, claimed that it’s what a dictator does.
