Five states in the United States are sending out direct payments in response to the surging inflation affecting their residents.
Eligible individuals in Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Maine, and South Carolina can receive $350 to $1,000 payments.
According to Marca, frontline workers in Connecticut receive a cash reward of $1,000 for their efforts during the pandemic. Grocery store staff, child care personnel, agricultural workers, and manufacturing workers are eligible for the cash reward, but the exam amount will depend on their income. The state will also distribute around $20,000 in payments under the state’s Payment Pay Program. Over 120,000 recipients are expected to receive the cash via direct deposit, and around 35,000 checks will be sent via mail for the next six weeks.
Idaho provides payments from income tax rebates, with a maximum of $300 for single filers and $600 for joint payers. The state will send around 800,000 checks, or $500 million, before March 31.
In Illinois, residents of New Lenox can benefit from a full property tax rebate with an average payment of around $350. The payments are directed at property owners of single-family homes, apartments, condos, and townhomes. The deadline for this year’s rebate has passed, and its payment was sent starting March 6.
Around 880,000 residents of Maine will benefit from direct payments of $450. The fund comes from the Winter Energy Relief Payments program and is distributed to all residents who filed their 2021 tax return last year until March 3. To qualify, a taxpayer should earn less than $100,000 a year if single, $150,000 a year for a head of household, and $200,000 if married filing jointly.
South Carolina also distributes a rebate of up to $800 for those who filed their returns before February 15, 2023. To qualify, applicants must have tax liabilities – those under $800 will receive a rebate equal to that tax liability, while those with liabilities of $800 and up will only receive $800.
Other states have also considered new payouts to assist their residents with the rising cost of living. Recently, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey proposed a one-time rebate of $400, and New Mexico plans to double its child tax credit.
