Anthony Fauci got an award from Donald Trump for his work on the COVID vaccine, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis aims Trump for praising Fauci as a criticism.
Just one day before he left office, former President Donald Trump gave Dr. Anthony Fauci an award for his work on the COVID vaccine.
This could give Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis more ammunition to attack the 45th president for how he handled the pandemic.
Journalist Piers Morgan’s new interview that aired this week, DeSantis aims Trump for praising Fauci, as criticism on Trump for how he handled COVID. DeSantis has not said he will run for president in 2024, but he is still seen as Trump’s biggest rival in the Republican primary.

During the interview, DeSantis made a clear difference between himself and Trump when it came to the pandemic. He aims Trump for praising Fauci as he said that if he had been president at the time, he would have “fired” Fauci.
When asked what made him different from Trump, DeSantis said, “Well, I think there are a few things.” “COVID was dealt with in a different way. I would have fired Fauci or someone else like him. I think he got way too big for his boots, and I think he did a lot of damage.”
In January 2021, Trump gave “presidential commendations” to Fauci, who was then the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and dozens of other people “for their outstanding work on Operation Warp Speed.”
Operation Warp Speed was a plan by the Trump administration to work with federal and private groups to make a COVID vaccine quickly.

A record of Trump praising Fauci’s work during the pandemic could hurt him as he starts to run for president in 2024, because DeSantis aims Trump for praising Fauci.
DeSantis aims Trump for praising Fauci and recently called out Fauci, who led Trump’s COVID task force before becoming President Biden’s chief medical adviser, for his actions during the pandemic. Fauci is now retired, but DeSantis wants him to be “held accountable” for his actions.
Fauci famously changed his mind about wearing masks as a way to protect yourself and supported closing schools and doing other things to keep people safe.
Last August, Fauci said that it’s “hard to understand” why some Americans think that wearing a mask is a violation of their freedom.
Fauci has also been a vocal critic of Trump, and when Trump was president, he often went against Fauci’s advice.
Fauci has been critical of both Trump and DeSantis for how they have handled the pandemic. In a new PBS documentary, he can be seen wiping away a tear as he watches Biden’s inauguration ceremony.
When Trump’s campaign was asked for a comment in response that he aims Trump for praising Fauci, they pointed to a statement Trump made earlier this week in which he called DeSantis an “average” and “big lockdown” governor.
Trump said that, as president, he gave governors the “freedom” to handle COVID as they saw fit, and he said that other Republican governors dealt with the pandemic better than DeSantis did, but aims Trump for praising Fauci.
During the COVID lockdowns of 2020, most Republicans and conservatives praised Florida for reopening earlier than most other states.
When asked for a comment, DeSantis’ office didn’t respond right away.
