Delta Passenger Triggers Emergency Exit Slide on Plane at Los Angeles Airport

Officials on Saturday said they detained a Delta Airlines passenger after unlocking one of the aircraft’s doors and used the emergency evacuation slide while the flight from Los Angeles to Seattle was getting ready to take off.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (via CNN), the incident aboard Delta Flight 1714 happened at around 10:40 a.m. local time while the aircraft was at the Los Angeles International Airport. 

FAA added that the passenger left the Boeing 737 while it was on the runway waiting to taxi for departure after triggering the emergency escape slide.

Delta Passenger Triggers Emergency Exit Slide in Plane

According to Los Angeles Airport Police, an unidentified passenger who raced to the front of the aircraft as it was pulling away from the gate and asked the flight attendant, “What do I do now?” while wearing a striped red and navy blue sweater and black slacks. 

Passengers said in a Fox News report that the flight attendant from Delta Air Lines demanded that the guy sit down, but the man resisted and instead proceeded to the emergency exit doors, turned the latch, opened the door, and slid down the emergency slide. 

The passengers added that the guy leapt onto the back of a luggage cart when the airplane stopped. According to them, the staff members held him down until LAX Police arrived.

What Happened After The Incident

CBS News reported that the passenger was being transported to a nearby hospital for a mental health assessment. 

The FBI has been informed about the incident, according to the Los Angeles Airport Police. 

Passengers on the Delta Air Lines jet were taken off after the incident and transferred to another aircraft. Fox News, citing FlightAware.com, said the aircraft, which was bound for Seattle, Washington, was delayed by three hours as a result of the incident.
