CommUnify announced a new $1.4 million water bill assistance program, which will provide a one-time payment of up to $2,000 for up to 700 qualified households. CommUnify is an area nonprofit organization that provides services and education to vulnerable populations.

Kemba Lawrence, the community service director of CommUnify, said the water had been an overlooked utility for financial assistance. The new water bill assistance program aims to fill that gap which will help low-income families with all basic utility needs. The one-time payment will allow those families to redirect their budget to other essentials such as medicine, housing, and food.

CommUnify offers 17 economic assistance programs providing payment relief to eligible households, including gas and electricity. Lawrence said the organization is working on a streamlined process so clients can prequalify for several services through a single entry point.

To qualify for the water bill assistance program, the applicant’s total household income must be 60% or below the state median income, which varies depending on the household size. For instance, a four-person household in Santa Barbara qualifies if the annual income is $62,313 or below. Those eligible in the LIHEAP, CalFresh, or CalWORKS also qualify for the water bill assistance program.

The latest water bill assistance program is among the 17 economic assistance programs of CommUnify, which aims to provide eligible households with a one-time relief payment.
