SNAP benefits help Americans with low income buy nutritious food. In 2019, the program was able to help around 38 million beneficiaries. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the figure is now approximately 42 million beneficiaries.

The SNAP benefits have been an excellent help for low-income families, especially during the pandemic. During the pandemic, which leads to a series of lockdowns, the government has added extra budget through the emergency allotment. The extra SNAP benefits came in handy as it allows beneficiaries to afford a higher budget for a decent meal for all the family members.

Why did the Federal Government Decide to Terminate the Emergency Allotment for Snap?

The emergency allotment was meant as a relief measure during the pandemic, resulting in lockdowns and high unemployment rates. Once the pandemic is over, the purpose of the emergency allotment has also ended.

However, some families have suffered the consequence of terminating the emergency allotment, especially with the current inflation rates and economic situation. Some states are considering relief measures to help struggling families cope with the skyrocketing prices.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has recently signed a bill to increase the SNAP benefits to $95. However, if the Federal government decided to revive the emergency allotment for inflation, the state would cut back the payment.
