California Tax Filing Deadline

Due to the April 15 tax deadline coinciding with a weekend and Washington D.C.’s Emancipation Day, taxpayers have three extra days to file their taxes this year and revealed a new California tax filing deadline. Furthermore, California residents residing in counties severely affected by dangerous weather in January are granted an even longer tax extension as well as tax relief opportunities.

The IRS has announced that these California storm victims now have until May 15, 2023, to file their federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. The extension is available to individuals residing in areas identified by FEMA, including the most populated regions of the state, such as Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange, Riverside, Sacramento, and San Francisco counties.

The Franchise Tax Board said the following items are covered by the California tax filing deadline extension:

  • For business entities, their tax returns and payments are due on March 15, 2023.
  • Those who are required to make quarterly estimated tax payments must do so on January 17, 2023, and April 18, 2023.
  • The deadline for tax returns and payments for individuals is on April 18, 2023.

Even if taxpayers are still waiting for previous returns, they should still file their 2022 tax returns. The IRS has processed both error-free paper and electronic tax returns submitted before November.
