A California man was out on bond after being arrested for domestic violence in December. When he allegedly murdered ex-girlfriend, he could have hurt more people, police say.
In a press release, the Anaheim Police Department said that officers found Mateus, the allegedly murdered ex-girlfriend, dead in an apartment building on March 17 at 2:24 p.m. after “receiving reports of suspicious circumstances.” The police didn’t say who owned the apartment, who called, or how she died.
Mirelle Mateus, who was 24 years old, was found dead in an Anaheim apartment, but the police won’t say much about what happened or why.
Anaheim police say that Aaron Romo, who is 36 years old, was arrested and charged with killing Mirelle Mateus, who is 24 years old.
“Homicide detectives went to the scene and found that Mateus had been killed. Romo was named as the suspect,” the department said.
“Romo was arrested in Riverside County later that day, and he was charged with murder and taken to the Anaheim PD Detention Facility.”
The Mateus family couldn’t be reached. However, the victim’s sister, Sandy, said that Mirelle was a “very special, caring, and generous person with a heart so pure and full of love” and that her death, as allegedly murdered ex-girlfriend, “shattered” her family’s hearts.
On Dec. 5, about four months before, Romo was arrested and charged with resisting and obstructing an officer and battery, both of which are misdemeanours. He was also charged with corporal injury causing the traumatic condition and false imprisonment, both of which are felonies. The charges came from something that happened with a woman named Jane Doe, with whom Romo was said to be dating.
It’s not clear if Mateus was the person who was hurt in December.
Romo had said he wasn’t guilty and paid bond in that case.
Court records was obtained that show the 36-year-old has been violent towards women in the past.
In September, a woman who had been in a relationship with the man before filed a restraining order, saying that he had hurt her in three states.
In April 2022, she and her friend were allegedly attacked and raped. In May 2022, they got into a fight in Las Vegas, and in August 2021, she was allegedly attacked in Arizona and taken to the hospital.
“Detectives think Romo has hurt other women in the past,” Anaheim police said. “We want anyone who has known Romo in the past to come forwards.”
Since the investigation is still going on, detectives have yet to say much about the evidence or possible reasons of the allegedly murdered ex-girlfriend.
Police asked anyone with information about the situation of allegedly murdered ex-girlfriend or Romo to call the Anaheim Police Department at 714-321-3669 or Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS or www.occrimestoppers.org.
