California aims to spend over $100 million of its Medicaid budget on housing each year

Thomas Marshall measured 311 pounds when 2022 began. He had survived 6 surgeries and 10 hospital stays over 5 years. He was living in a horrible, damp home with 5 other people, 2 ball pythons, four Chihuahuas, and a rack filled with rats when he developed an open cut on his left leg that would not heal.

After over a year, Marshall has reduced by about 100 pounds. His injury has recovered. His blood pressure has stabilized once more. His nerve-damaged foot has healed so he can now regularly go to the park.

Several reasons contributed to Marshall’s rapid turn, however, the one that he values so much is having permanent housing when Sacramento managed him to secure a 500 square foot (46.4 square meters), one-bedroom flat on a top downtown floor. He has white pine cabinetry, wooden floors, and a glass jar containing Bit-O-Honeys on the counter.

He declared, “To me, it’s the most significant 500 square feet I’ve always had.” Being here has already enhanced my wellness in every way.”
