In recent months, Republicans have been receiving attacks from the White House and President Joe Biden for their stance on Social Security and other entitlement programs, including raising the retirement age and sunset bills. CNN has uncovered old clips in their KFile and found he proposed several bills like Republican advocating today.

On Raising the Retirement Age

In his recent State of the Union address, Biden attacked Republicans for raising the retirement age to 70 and wanting to cut the two entitlement programs. The White House promised not to support any retirement age increase in future negotiations. However, Biden has once proposed raising the retirement age in 2005.

In other clips from the 1980s by CNN’s KFile, He proposed increasing the retirement age to 70 as the life expectancy in the United States increased. Biden later backed proposals on increasing the retirement age, raising the cap, raising the Social Security tax, and cutting benefits in 2005. However, Biden seems to have changed his stance on raising the retirement age.

White House spokesperson Robyn Patterson said the President has publicly vowed to veto any plans cutting Medicare or Social Security benefits. He added that the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare had given a presidential endorsement to President Biden, as they appreciate Biden’s decades-long support for protecting the Medicare and Social Security benefits.

On Sunset Bill

Biden has also hammered Republicans over their position of wanting to cut Medicare and Social Security. He zeroed in on Senator Rick Scott’s (R-Florida) sunset plan, although Biden introduced a similar proposal in 1975. The proposal would have sunset all legislations without exemptions for entitlement programs. Scott said his sunset provisions would not apply to Medicare or Social Security.

Biden introduced his sunset proposal in 1975 that would have terminated funding all federal programs – including Medicare and Social Security – unless Congress reauthorized them. In fact, President Joe Biden was the first to introduce the federal sunset bill, which he later bragged on his 1978 Senate reelection campaign.
