Attempt by the Biden administration to reduce essential water supply in western states

Under extreme water shortages that extend back for decades, the Biden administration on Tuesday recommended steps that might drastically cut water supplies in 7 western states.

The Colorado River Basin’s declining groundwater levels are being addressed by 2 potential solutions that the Department of the Interior (DOI) has identified in a draft plan. Both plans call for government-required supply cutbacks for states that rely on the river, which supplies water to over 40 million Americans and is essential to the businesses of western states.

Failure isn’t a viable choice, according to Tommy Beaudreau, deputy secretary of the DOI. “The Biden-Harris administration is using each tool and asset available through the President’s making investments in America agenda to safeguard the long-term viability of the Colorado River System both now and in the future,” the statement reads. “We recognize the intensity of the intensifying drought.”

The 1,450-mile Colorado River serves as a source of water for millions of Americans, maintains 5.5 million acres of farm production, generates electricity for millions of people using hydroelectric dams, and serves an important economic and environmental purpose.
