Netflix has purchased The Stranger, a gripping Australian thriller that debuted at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and will be available on the streaming service in October 2022. It stars Joel Edgerton and Sean Harris.

The film is written and directed by actor and filmmaker Thomas M. Wright, whose 2018 film Acute Misfortune served as his directing debut.

Sean Harris and Joel Edgerton star in the See-Saw Films, Anonymous Content, and Blue Tongue Films production The Stranger.

Many online critics have given the film glowing reviews. The Guardian gave the film five stars and stated that by a particular moment in the film:

Release Date

The Stranger on Netflix was first introduced to us through a Cannes Film Festival trailer.

We now have official confirmation of the release date, which is Wednesday, October 19, 2022.

According to reports, all regions besides Italy, Benelux, Portugal, Greece, Israel, and the Middle East would be able to watch the movie on Netflix.

In October 2022, the movie will also be shown in a few theatres. Obviously, this is to ensure that the film can enter the Oscars and other award ceremonies in 2023.

Synopsis

“The Stranger is based around two strangers who strike up a conversation on a long journey. One is a suspect in an unsolved missing person’s case and the other is the undercover operative on his trail. Their uneasy friendship becomes the core of the tightly wrought thriller, which is based on the true story of one of the largest investigations and undercover operations in Australia.”

Cast

Joel Edgerton (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Sean Harris (The Borgias, Mission Impossible) are the stars of the Netflix series.

Critics who saw the film at two film festivals have given the leads’ performances appreciation.
