The Movie “Rust” Incident
The actor from “Glengarry Glen Ross” will return to court on May 3 for a two-week preliminary hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence to proceed to trial in the “Rust” shooting case. On October 21, 2021, Alec’s pretend gun accidentally fired a live cartridge, striking cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, in the chest. She was instantly killed on the New Mexico set of the movie.
Alec was previously facing up to five years in prison, however the Santa Fe District Attorney’s Office later said they were dismissing the firearms enhancement allegation against him. For the shooting, he is still accused of involuntary manslaughter, which carries a reduced penalty of 18 months if found guilty. Alec said he had nothing to do with Hutchins’ death and hadn’t even pulled the trigger on the pretend gun before he was charged.
He was scheduled to be in court on February 24 to answer the charge of involuntary manslaughter, but he submitted a not guilty plea and forfeited his right to a preliminary hearing. Prior to suing four crew members for carelessness, he reached a wrongful death settlement with Halyna’s family last year. In his complaint, he claimed that numerous crew members had neglected to ensure set safety by giving him a loaded revolver.
