According to local authorities, New Jersey imam is in stable state since getting stabbed throughout morning prayer

As per local authorities, an imam is in a stable state after already being attacked throughout a Sunday morning prayer service at a mosque in Paterson, New Jersey.

Imam Sayed Elnakib was attacked after the initial prayer of the day at Omar Mosque in south Paterson, about 5:30 a.m., whereas the congregation was bending down for prayer, according to mosque spokesperson Abdul Hamdan.

The accused, who’d been unidentified to worshipers before the stabbing on Sunday, was praying when he “turned to look forward holding a knife and attacked Imam Sayed more than once – at least 2 times,” according to Hamdan.

The accused tried to leave the mosque just after the altercation, but congregants “have been capable of tracking him down, detain him, and grab him” till the cops came and detained him, he told.

According to Hamdan, there were over 200 people in the mosque at the moment of the knife attack. The spokesperson told he thought this was an isolated case and guaranteed all congregants that “the mosque is protected and allows access to discipline their religion.”

Mayor Andre Sayegh stated that he went to see Imam Sayed Elnakib in the health center shortly after the stabbing. According to the mayor, the imam is secure at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center.
