California sheriffs say a physical altercation occurred at a Sikh temple during a religious festival on Sunday, leading to a gunfight. The incident leaves two wounded.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s office said the incident occurred during the Nagar Kirtan festival on Sunday, which began at 9 a.m. Thousands of worshippers and spectators have gathered at the Gurdwara Sahib, a Sikh temple at Bradshaw Road. Investigators say more than 10,000 people attended the event.

Deputies responded to a shooting near the temple grounds around 2:30 p.m. and found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Both people were immediately transported to a hospital and were expected to survive.

Investigators interviewed witnesses revealing a physical altercation between three East Indian men. One of the men pulled out a gun and shot one of the men. The third individual, identified as 21-year-old Karman Sandhu, also pulled out a handgun and shot the first individual. Sandhu tried to flee the scene on foot but was later located and taken into police custody.

Bobbie Singh-Allen, a spokesperson for the temple and Elk Grove mayor, addressed the shooting, saying it was a senseless act of violence. He said the men were not affiliated with the temple and brought their issues to a place of worship. The organizers hired security for the event but failed to perform pat-downs or use metal detectors. Singh-Allen said this was the first Nagar Kirtan parade held at the Sikh temple. He and other leaders hope the shooting does not keep people away from other celebrations.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s office requests anyone with information on the incident to contact them at 916-874-5115 or Sacrament Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-HELP.

Days before this incident, another shooting occurred at a private Christian School in Nashville, Tennessee leaving three adults and three students dead. The shooter was identified as a 28-year-old woman who was later shot and killed by police.
