Perry, who is best known for his work on House of Payne, The Oval, and other films as well as for creating the Madea character in several of his movies, will write and direct A Jazzman’s Blues.

Perry has spoken candidly about the movie before, and her most recent remarks about this collaboration with Netflix are as follows:

“I have waited a quarter of a century to tell this story, and now is a perfect time and Netflix is the perfect partner. That is my labor of love; the one that I want to do more than anything.”

In 2006, the film was prominently featured on Lionsgate’s schedule.

A longtime Perry collaborator and producer, Michelle Sneed will serve as the project’s executive producer.

This isn’t the only Tyler Perry project that Netflix is reportedly working on. We revealed in December 2021 that Netflix was now developing a brand-new, untitled film featuring Perry in the lead role.

It complements the producer’s existing Netflix portfolio, which already includes Fatal Affair, A Madea Homecoming, and A Fall From Grace. Perry appeared in Don’t Look Up as well.

Release Date

We can now officially certify that the Friday, September 23rd, 2022 release date is accurate thanks to Netflix’s new 2022 film schedule’s official release.

A Jazzman’s Blues will make its world premiere at Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Fest in August 2022 before becoming available on Netflix.

The webpage for Tyler Perry states:

“This year, Tyler Perry will preview his highly anticipated film “A Jazzman’s Blues” at the festival, with a series of clips and a conversation presentation slated for Saturday, August 6th, at 8 p.m.”

From August 16th, 2022, the film will be shown in some theatres.

Plot

In the post-World War II South, a young Black jazz singer leaves his little town in search of stardom in the movie A Jazzman’s Blues.

The film’s 1937–1987 time frame will allow for some unique narrative as it delves deeply into the character’s history, present, and future. The movie’s official slogan is as follows:

“Set from 1937 to 1987, an investigation into an unsolved murder unveils a story full of forbidden love, deceit, and a secret that has been held for 40 years.”

Apparently, the movie will receive an R rating.

Cast

Relative novices Joshua Boone (Wheels, Premature) and Solea Pfeiffer (The Good Fight, Curb Your Enthusiasm) were revealed as the lead actors in March 2021.

Both have prior theatre and singing experience, with Pfeiffer playing Elza Hamilton in the US Tour of the critically renowned musical Hamilton. There hasn’t been any other cast information released as of yet.

Tyler Perry originally planned to star in the 1995 film alongside Will Smith, Halle Berry, Diana Ross, and Ben Kingsley. In a recent interview, he addressed that:

“I’ve aged out of it because the characters are all in their twenties. So I’m looking for that new talent, for brand new fresh faces who have committed themselves to the craft and who are incredible actors to play these roles.”

Numerous additional actors and actresses who will appear have since been confirmed. They comprise:

  • Ryan Eggold (BlacKkKlansman)
  • Milauna Jackson (Dexter)
  • E. Roger Mitchell as Buster (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire)
  • Amirah Vann (Underground)
  • Lauren Buglioli (The Oval)
  • Brent Antonello (S.W.A.T.)
  • Austin Scott as Willie Earl (Pose)
