On Monday, authorities said that two children were killed after they were held in a hostage situation in Mississippi at an apartment complex which is where the deadly day happened.
According to a press release from the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office, Marquez Griffin, 25-year-old, in Jonestown Griffin was arrested after a police standoff, during which he allegedly shot the two innocent children, identified as a 9-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl, which he held a third child at gunpoint.
Authorities said an off-duty sheriff’s officer who lives around the area immediately responded to the scene at around 2 a.m. after hearing a ring about a child who had been shot. After that, the police said that they found out that a man had allegedly been holding a young child at gunpoint.
The police were able to convince the suspect who held the child to drop his weapon. Police got the child out of the suspects and got the child to safety before the suspect was taken into custody.
According to police after Griffin was arrested that deputies discovered two children suffering from gunshot wounds inside the home. Authorities said, one of the children was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the other child was taken to a hospital, where the child died later.
The police have not yet identified the relationship between the children nor released their names. Meanwhile, a family member identified the little girl as Averi Jones the 1-year-old girl who died in the hospital. Marquez Griffin had just recently moved back to the area from Arlington, Texas, which has yet to reveal a potential motive for the violence that occurred, according to the sheriff’s office. Officials said, Griffin, is being held at the Coahoma County Adult Detention Center on charges of murder and aggravated assault.
