In the United States, 1 in 8 families that had kids could not afford to nourish their households. This is true regardless of knowing that many people hold down multiple employments to afford their constantly rising rents and maintain a vehicle for transportation to and from work.
Republicans in Washington, D.C., are calling for significant cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP or food stamps), an essential program that helps millions of people put meals on their plates, even as households in our region struggle with the increasing price of groceries and try to prepare nutritious dishes for their kids to consume.
Considering each SNAP dollar creates $1.50 and $1.80 in revenue, SNAP supports our nation economically.
Republicans have proposed a law that, for the initial time at all, might restrict SNAP benefits to 3 months for grandparents and parents with kids older than 7 if they are unable to fulfill rigorous job requirements. Adults who have any minor children are currently excluded.
