The Shelby County Board of Commissioners decides to accept a retired lawmaker

Justin J. Pearson, the legislator for District 86, has been re-elected by the Shelby County Commission with a majority vote, just seven days after being removed from office by the Republican supermajority in the Tennessee House of Representatives.

The other lawmaker who was banned this past week for his participation in a gun control demonstration, Rep. Justin Jones, was also returned by Nashville’s Metropolitan Council just 2 days earlier than Pearson’s reappointment.

Jones will act as a legislator in the meantime while a special election is held.

After the commission’s decision, Pearson remarked, “Nashville believed they could shut down democracy.” You can’t release hope, is the message I have for all the Nashville residents who choose to kick us out. Justice cannot be removed. You cannot take our voice away. And you are unable to take our battle away. We expect to carry on the battle. Continue to fight for justice and truth until they drop like water and flow continuously. Let’s continue our duties.”
