The city of Chelsea in Massachusetts has begun distributing payments to households in need as part of the Chelsea Eats program

The program will issue payments ranging from $200 to $400 to a total of 738 households, depending on the size of the household. The first payment was made on March 15th, and the final payment is expected to be issued in May.

According to a city spokesperson, the payments will be delivered through debit cards that were distributed to recipients in early March. The amount of the payment is determined by the size of the household, with a one-person household receiving $200, a two-person household receiving $300, and households of three or more receiving $400.

To qualify for the program, applicants must be residents of Chelsea with a household income that is 30% less than the area median. This means that a household of one must have an income of less than $29,450, while a household of two must have an income of less than $33,650. The income limit increases slightly for each additional person in the household.

The program is set to issue payments on the 15th of each month for a total of three months

There are currently no plans to extend the program beyond the May payment, according to the spokesperson. Residents who are eligible for the Chelsea Eats program can find more information on the city’s webpage on COVID-19 emergency assistance programs.

The program is part of a larger effort by Massachusetts to help households in need during the pandemic. Other programs include the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, which provide assistance to families with children.

Overall, the Chelsea Eats program aims to provide essential financial support to households in the city during a time when many families are facing financial difficulties due to the pandemic.

The payments are expected to help recipients purchase food and pay for essential utilities, easing the financial burden on families and ensuring that they can continue to meet their basic needs.
