Consumers in New Jersey will start paying 42 cents for every shopping bag as of Tuesday. The retail giant is hoping the action will assist in addressing the climate disaster.
Retail shops, grocers, and restaurants in New Jersey were required by a new rule to stop offering or selling singular-use plastic carry bags starting in May 2022.
While consumers, the state government, and other shops get used to this new requirement, Walmart has offered free recyclable bags in New Jersey.
Freebies won’t be available to customers anymore, though.
Consumers must now utilize their recyclable bags or purchase them at the counter.
Customers can choose not to use delivery bags when making their final order, yet they must leave totes or carry bags at the doorstep.
The change has angered some shoppers.
One Twitter user remarked, “Along with self-checkout, this is yet another nail in the final Walmart coffin.”
“Kindly elaborate on why grocery store bags are pulled out when we still purchase and use garbage bags that choke landfills. Another person added, “They’re plastic.”
