Trump has called for protests, but McCarthy says, “We want peace out there”

On Sunday, Speaker Kevin McCarthy rejected Donald Trump’s demands for rallies if he is finally charged, asking rather than “calmness” and cautioning about violence.

After predicting he would be detained on Tuesday, the former president made his comments at a press conference the following day. This was in response to reports that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg was getting ready to file charges against the former president about claims that he funded Stormy Daniels’s bribe money.

McCarthy said to the press on the first evening of the three-day annual issues retreat of the House GOP, “I don’t think people should oppose this, no. “We want peace outside.”

The ex-president of Truth Social appealed for his fans to “Protest, bring our country back,” when criticizing the inquiry and its lead investigator Saturday. Yet the top House Republican attempted to soften Trump’s language in a reference to a common GOP strategy throughout his 4 years in office, claiming that it was more clear that he wanted to “educate” citizens about Bragg’s activities.

“If you spoke with President Trump, he probably would disagree with you. I believe that when President Trump speaks and someone says people can protest, you might mistakenly think that he is encouraging them to do so.
