Governor Kathy Hochul’s proposal to restrict flavored cigarettes is being criticized by a group of sheriffs in New York. In her 2023 State of the State address, Governor Hochul declared her intention to abolish them.
New York State prohibited the sale of flavored vapor products without an FDA marketing order in May 2020. Governor Hochul now wants to increase the ban.

Governor Hochul will present legislation to extend the State’s ban on the sale of flavored smoking products by restricting the purchase of all flavored tobacco products, confirming New York’s leadership in assuring a smoke-free generation.
Cigarettes with a menthol flavor are included. She also stated that she wanted to increase the price that the state now charges on each pack of cigarettes sold. All of this is an effort by the governor to lessen the number of New Yorkers, mainly young New Yorkers, who engage in dangerous habits.
