According to her family and friends, an Oakland baker who was killed during a robbery by being dragged to the ground would not have wanted her killer to go to jail. In line with this, to Emily Harris, a close friend of Jen Angel, “I think Jen would corroborate that of course that’s what people have been brainwashed to believe is the answer, to lock people up.” However, we are aware that by locking up those responsible for her harm, we are only causing her further harm.

When the suspects fled the area, Angel tried to follow them but got trapped in the door of their car and dragged for more than 50 feet before her head hit the sidewalk and they drove off.

In a hospital, Angel was pronounced dead on Thursday after two failed attempts to turn off her life support.

The family released a statement saying that Jen “was a longtime social movement activist and anarchist who did not believe in state brutality, carceral punishment, or incarceration as an effective or just remedy to social violence and inequity.” Based to Harris, who claims to have been Angel’s first political mentor, there should be “accountability,” but that doesn’t imply “throwing a person into deeper harm.”

Restore Oakland is a nearby group that Harris claims she contacted about the issue. Based on the organization’s website, it serves as a “community hub where people congregate to cultivate neighborhood solidarity, restorative economics, and healing justice.”

The family pledged to pursue all viable alternatives to traditional prosecution, including restorative justice, “if the Oakland Police Department does make an arrest in this matter.”

Although no arrests have been made, the Oakland Police Agency is investigating the incident as a homicide and believes two suspects who are known to the department are involved.
