By April, Californians Will Receive Less CalFresh Benefits

Millions of Californians receiving SNAP benefits through CalFresh, the state’s program that distributes them (also called food stamps), may experience a huge reduction in their monthly payments by April.

The COVID-19 emergency allotments for the program will expire by March, according to a vote by federal lawmakers.

It also happens at a time when inflation is still out of control and many low-income families are having difficulty finding stable employment. Food banks in the greater Los Angeles area said they are getting ready for a rise in demand as program participants attempt to fill the gap in help by using the food bank’s facilities.

A lot of people in California are asking Gov. Newsom to change his 2023–2024 budget proposal and increase funds for CalFresh and food banks.
