South Dakota Governor Proposes A New Bill

The prices of basic commodities such as food continue to spike in the different states as an effect of the soaring inflation rate. This hardly hit American families who belong to the low-income class or only depend on financial assistance from the government.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem proposed to the state legislatures recently the House Bill 1075. If this will be passed and signed into law, this will help to eliminate state-wide tax on groceries. Meanwhile, other state leaders are also advocating the same.

Gov. Noem said, “I’ve visited dozens of grocery stores across South Dakota in recent months, and every time, I meet South Dakotans who are shocked by the rising cost of food. They need relief – and we can afford to give it to them,” She also claimed that this will help to save $102 million for South Dakota shoppers.

According to a published article in The U.S. Sun, the state currently charge a 4.5 percent tax on grocery items. South Dakota Representative Mary Fitzgerald, a co-sponsor of the bill, said, “Eliminating this tax will make it easier for South Dakota families to make ends meet, including my own kids and grandkids.”

He also added, “As a former appropriator, I am confident that our state budget can afford this while still planning conservatively and responsibly for the future.”

Moreover, fellow co-sponsor Senator John Wilks also said that it is the duty to pass down the state’s record tax revenues back to the people.
