After an appeals court reversed Aileen Cannon’s decision to appoint a special master in a well-known case involving former President Donald Trump, calls for her impeachment have increased.
Cannon, a judge in the Southern District of Florida who was appointed by Trump, had agreed to the former president’s request for a special master to examine papers that the FBI had taken from his Mar-a-Lago estate on August 8.
A three-judge committee of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, which has its headquarters in Florida, reversed Cannon’s ruling on Thursday in response to a request from the Department of Justice (DOJ), which had requested a special master.
The judges’ ruling was strongly worded and stated, while the warrant for searching Trump’s house was “exceptional,” it did not grant “the judiciary authorisation to participate in an ongoing inquiry.”
Vanity Fair and The New York Times contributor Cristian Farias, who has written about law and justice for both magazines and others, tweeted: “Trump judge Aileen Cannon gets eviscerated here” and included a quote from the three judges’ decision.

Cannon received criticism from other social media users, and an impeachment petition has been started on Change.org. When we looked at it first on Friday morning, it had over 1,900 signatures.
Mike Sacks, a visiting professor at Duke University’s DeWitt Wallace Center for Media & Democracy, tweeted that Cannon managed to keep Trump’s good graces despite receiving death threats from his followers.
