Representative-elect Katie Hill (D-Agua Dulce) issued a statement Tuesday morning regarding the sexual misconduct allegations against California Democratic Party Chair Eric Bauman, who took a leave of absence on Monday, Nov. 26.

“If we are ever going to change our culture that perpetuates and often normalizes sexual assault and harassment, we have to start by believing survivors,” Hill said. “The time for those in power to get away with this behavior is over — it doesn’t matter which party you’re a part of, harassment and assault down happen along partisan lines.”

The investigation into Bauman’s behavior was prompted by a statement released by California Democratic Party Vice Chairman Daraka Larimore-Hall on Friday, Nov. 23. In the written statement, Larimore-Hall said he had recently “learned of multiple serious and credible allegations that Chairman Bauman sexually harassed, and in some cases sexually assaulted, individuals during Party functions.”

“Our party, and the California delegation, deserve a chair who they can trust and who will fight on behalf of survivors,” Hill said. “As a thorough and neutral investigation is conducted, I agree with Eric Bauman’s decision to step down from his role as chair. I stand with the survivors in asking for their respect, privacy and anonymity.”
